Ihave two problems mabey related mabey not. I have an '86 bronco c6 tranny. When I put it into reverse (hot or cold) I get a loud clinking clanking noise(similar to fan hitting shroud) constant with the rpms that gets worse under load. from crawling under the rig while in reverse I am almost certain that it is coming from within the bell housing. Ive checked the torque bolts and all are tight. The kicker is only in reverse, not low or any other gears under load or not. the second mabey related is under severe load in reverse she just doesnt have it. as the noise gets louder the power gets weeker. I am totaly at a loss. and before I tear the whole thing out I thought someone out there might be able to share some wisdom.
In the instructions for my new starter(rebuilt) there was a `spacer` that would be used to space the starter nose/gear away from the flywheel. The point being is that it said that crank shaft end play can be excessive enough to cause it to hit the flywheel.
SO.. after removing the trans/flywheel inspection plate i could look up at the nose of the starter to see the clearance.
Maby that is the problem the force in reverse is causing the starter to hit the flywheel!
If the starter is not `retracting` back it may hit also..

thanxs for the info i am going to look into it tommorow. mabey you could tell me how much clearance I should be looking for. and also can you help me to understand / visualize this spacer and how it weorks?thanxs again!
I think I have mastered the science of complicating things, when really they are quite simple.thanxs for putting me on the right train of thought. What it was- the previous owner of the truck had completly cut away at the dust cover(seperator plate?) where the stater goes thru. this was causing the starter to sit in too far. not much,@1/16" but obviously enough to cause the pinion to hit the flywheel under load in reverse. For now I placed a couble of washers between the starter and bellhousing to give me the correct clearance. sound gone. All is well. thanxs again.
Nice ...You found the problem... __JOHN__Õ¿ö
