In the process of swapping a 400M for a 460 in my 1979 4x4
Supercab,i need to rebuild the tranny & transfercase also.
I have a choice of doner tranys:
1) the orignal C6
2) C6 from a 1977 1-ton van
3) 1970 Lincoln trany (motor doner) which I assume is a C6,
didn't look yet
4) 1977 400M Marquis C6
I'm aware of the output shaft diffs. Is ther a better C6 or are they all the same?????

I wouldn't know without opening them up and taking them apart...but I do know that that are major differences in the amount of tourque and HP that some of the early C-6's would handle. The forward (direct) drum will have room for 5 steels and frictions instead of three for the lighter duty gearboxes...this is easy to upgrade if you can find a 5 friction drum to swap.
The next major difference is in the first/reverse large friction/steels that are at the very back of the case, they actually sit in the case, not in a drum. The light duty trannys have three...the heavy duty trannys have 5. Deen

The C6 was redesigned for better shifts for the 1977 (I think) model year. Thus, I'd avoid the Lincoln C6. What engine was in the 1-ton van? If it was a 460, that might be a good choice.
