Dying coils - do they throw a CEL code?

Just wondering.

I just started getting the dreaded shudder so I stuck a can of seafoam in it to see if that helps. Also ordered new injectors, but wondering if the coils might be starting to go? Do they throw a code, or is there a way to test them?

Also, who's got recommendations on where to buy them? I'd rather not (hoping it's the injectors since they are a helluva lot cheaper!) since I need to fix the windshield now too.
Grumble....

thanks guys.

You can get a set of eight coils off ebay for under $100 bucks, that many here have used and been happy with.

As cbradford mentioned, you can get the coils off eBay for under $100. That's where I got the set of 8 I installed 12,000 miles ago and they're working great!

As for the codes when a coil is going bad, just speaking from personal experience, I did not get any codes until the misfire was really severe. I drove for 2 weeks with a misfire before it became so bad that the computer threw a code. But, when a coil is going bad, it's pretty easy to tell. Pain is you don't know which one until you get a code or do some switching COP's around to try and find it on your own.

I think we need a sticky at the top for "Ebay search terms that work for random parts."

Along with one that's a list of interchangeable parts from different years - now that I know they changed the step brackets from 97 to 98.

For the $90 it is worth buying them and leaving them in the garage. That way when you need one you don't have to wait for them to arrive. It costs around $70 to buy just one locally.

Need some help with the "dreaded shudder". Have a 2001 w/4.6 and just had a really bad idle, set a code and I replaced just the COP on number 3. Much better. But lately between 55/60 MPH if I gently step on the gas to just speed up a little I get a shudder, almost like a bump then smooths right out. I was thinking tans kick down - but it's so slight and otherwise the trans is working fine, this thread go me thinking - well is it the engine?

So can someone talk a little more about what this shudder is? Like you all have said for under 100 dollars I can just replace all the COPS anyway. Oh yes, 70,000 miles, guessing original plugs and now have two replaced COPS, engine had one when I bought it.

I know, lots to say, idle isn't bad and not the issue, so I am ruling out the IAC, but could it also be a function of the TPS? I ask all this as since it's about 100 dollars to hook up the Ford machine, maybe I do just replace a bunch of parts and hope?

Thanks for any tips

This sounds like it could be the lockup converter in the tranny trying to disengage. You might want to have a tranny shop take it for a test drive and see what they say about it.

How hard are these to install? Looks like lots to work around on the drivers side. My 97 with 195k miles still has all the originals but one is definitely dead. Thanks.
