E4OD/V10 Problems
The first trip out we knew we had a problem. When pulling our small trailer, the tranny would downshift from OD on the slightest grade and would not upshift after cresting the grade. I had to push the OD override button twice to get it to shift. In comparison, our 460's would NEVER downshift from OD enless you mashed on the gas pedal.
Eventually, on our first trip the OD light started flashing. I stopped and called our Service Advisor. Well, that was 80-some thousand miles ago and Ford still hasn't done anything about it!!! I report the problems, which have multiplied and gotten worse (we never know what gear the tranny will be in--sometimes it won't leave first, sometimes it goes from first to OD, sometimes it goes to no gear at all), every oil change. We have a 100,000 mile, Premium Care Extended warranty. The last response I got from my dealer was that "engineering was not interested in my vehicle because of the miles on it." It seems like they are waiting for 100,000 miles or for us to get stranded in the middle of nowhere. They seem to insist on having a complete failure or nothing at all.
Anyone care to comment?
I have towed a 30 foot, 8,000lb plus trailer through snow, 105 degree, extreme hills etc with no problem and 95% of the time I stay in OD and it doesn't shift.
When I expect heavy hills, I will often kick it to 3rd until I am out of the hills. Or I will wait until the tranny starts to hunt around in the gears too much and then put it into 3rd.
This is what the tranny shop I use recommends too, wonder if he has a vested interest?
Good Luck.
