The previous owner of my expy had an aftermarket flowmaster muffler installed. Yeah, Ok the thing sounds like a muscle car now, but it's my comfort cruiser and I really don't want to HEAR the exhaust. Also, I think the muffler is about 1/3 too small for the vehicle and really restricting the airflow anyway, since it's about 1/3 the size of the area where the heatshield is.
So, the stupid question is if I install a LARGER muffler body, it should quiet down a bit, right? I'll try and get some measurements next time I'm dirty and crawling around under there, but I'm pretty sure it's too small (the in/out pipes are even smaller thand the stock stuff) - the muffler body is about the size of a msall car muffler.
Oh well - anyone back up my idea of installing a larger (Stock) size to quiet it down?
If you want it quieter, you will have to go to a bigger muffler, not necessarily stock. Flowmaster sells 3-chamber 50-Series SUV mufflers. They are very LARGE and let just a little rumble through. If you want a little rumble, I'd go that route. If you want it to sound stock (quiet), I'd go to a junk yard for a used one.
To comment on your restriction idea, just because the muffler is smaller, doesn't mean it is restricting. The pipe size is what restricts, and you said that the inlet/outlet looks smaller than the stock pipes. That's restriction. I run bullet mufflers on my mud bogger that are only 12" long x 5 " inch diameter, but they have a 3.5" inlet/outlet. They will flow way more than the Expy muffler even though they are way smaller, but they are extremely loud.
Yeah, the piping going into and out of this muffler had to be restricted down a size from stock. NOt sure if it's 3.5 to 3 or what not, but it's definently smaller!
I used a Magnaflow XL series Stainless muffler for a replacement on my Navigator. Almost as quiet as stock,Stainless steel, and inexpensive with a lifetime warranty.

look for a muffler with 2.5" inlet/outlets and about 24" of body length...so it will be about 30" in total length.
that will get you a little bit noise.
if you want zero noise, go for a longer muffler. the oval shaped ones are pretty good at quieting things down as well. I imagine you can find what you're after for under $50
yeah - the one that is in there, 2.5" inlet, and I think it's only about 20" in length TOTAL! Whoever did the install added at least 8 inches of new piping to match up to the new muffler.

morons.
It's to make it louder, and also allows the shop to use a less expensive muffler for higher profit margin on the job. I can't tell you how many I've seen like that.

the size of a muffler doesnt have anything to do with the sound of it... it whats inside.
basically if u want to go back to a nice quiet ride, u should pick up a stock muffler... its chambered and packed to keep a decent airflow and stay quiet.
That magnaflow muffler is definitely not retricting airflow, the stock muffler would if anything. The louder the pipe is, the less restriction is going on.
