Question eather dependency

I just got this 89 F-250 non-turbo diesel. did about 500 worth of work so far wraped up the diesel and trans leaks and replaced starter and batts. but where i am at now is it will not start without assistance from some sort of starting fluid. i heard it has become dependent and the habit can be broke. it will start normal about and hour after running but any longer i have to use some fluid again. anyone know how to break my "drug" addicted diesels habit?

motocraft beru plugs all around, a good wired(functioning) glow plug system, or like in my case a common sense manual gp system with a momentary switch. Mine was the same way and it was because of the GP Controller crapping itself. I bypassed it and it will start first time every time(knock on some friggin wood someone)
WB

edit, oh and when you decide let me know and i will direct you to the right diagrams. Second, when the system is up and running, dont ever use that crap again, the ether that is......last last last ditch effort to start only.

Test that you get power to the Glow Plugs with a test light...

Unplug a GP, Connect one end of a test light to the GP wire, the other end to ground, place it so you can see it when you turn the key on, turn the key on...

Does it light up?

To do a Test Light test of the glow plugs.
1. Unplug the GP
2. Connect one end of the test light to + battery
3. Touch the other end to the terminal on the end of the GP (where you unplugged the harness)

If it lights the chances are it's good.

This test is very susceptible to miss diagnoses and should only be used for a quick reference.

To do a positive test use a volt/ohm meter and test the ohms between the terminal and base. Should be .5 to 1 ohm resistance.

Glow plugs are key... My old man's 84 was fired on ether for years, I moved back to the area after being gone for several years and started working on it. Put in new glow plugs and injectors, fires just fine now without any ether.

They are similar, but hookups are different. I don't remember all what is changed, but they are very close.
