I have a 2000 windstar se van with the 3.8L. I was thinking about towing a 2000lb. popup camper. Is this a good idea or crazy and should be forgotten. I bought the van with 16000 mi. and it now has 98000mi. it has been very reliable with the exception of o2 sensors and automatic door not closing all the way. It has a tranny cooler and has had regular scheduled maintenance the manual says with tow package it is supposed to capable of towing 3500lbs.
Hitch 'er up and go! You wont have a problem, leave the o/d off when driving in stop and go traffic, but click it back on while cruising at hw speeds. You'll be fine.
2,000 lbs should not be too much trouble, might consider a trans service before hitting the road though......Just stay out of OD except for flat hi-way.
2000 lbs should be fine. I'd get a tranny cooler installed just to be safe. Get a good class 3 3500 lb rated hitch. Be VERY VERY careful on the wiring for the trailer lights. You need to go to Ford, and GOOd autoparts store, or a locla U-Haul and get wiring harness specifically designed for the Windstar. Anything else will screw the hell out of your car. Even the harness made for the Windstar will only work for about 2 years before it craps out (in my experience). Not saying don't do it, just be careful. I've seen people have it work out well and some that had nightmares with the wiring. Trust me, I work on these things all the time! If you have any specific questions just ask.
