Turbo

Well got to love learning more. Diesel courses play of, I know that you can decrease the ehaust side of a turbo to get it to spool quicker, and you can also increase the intake side to increase CFM. I have found you cna get the parts so you can increase the intake side (Also makes it 4 inch, not three like stock) and decrease the exhaust, and a better impeller blade, so what I want to know is anyone on here ever torn apart a turbo, reubilt it, and did upgrades like what I mentioned to it? Cause on my current begining to work budget, it sounds like what I should do, and I think it would be fun to persay make my own custom turbo. Just wondering, cause I know I can rebuild it, just wondering if its hard to mess with the parts and such and get the turbo together. Thanks guys in advance.

Thumbs down not a thumbs down??

our turbos are extremely easy to rebuilt and tear apart but the upgrade possiblilties are not that wide... the banks impeller wheel is just an upgrade for the superduty trucks, 99 and up, the banks wheel is basically our wheel, there wheel is designed to decrease turbulance? im not sure, something along thoughs lines, so it would not be an upgrade to our turbo, and although that may make sence on your logic about the bigger and smaller housings, your logic is a little off, you actually decrease the size of the intake side to decrease spool time, it will light much faster but you will yeild higher egts do the the less air flow. i dont belive any one makes an upgrade for an exhaust housing? but 12 bolts and the turbo is completely appart.

I have the one inch turbo housing and I've been looking for my stock one to put back on. I'm getting to hot on the top end while pulling. At first I thought it was pretty cool to get a heavy load going from a dead stop faster but now I want more at the top end.

I'd recommend upgrading to a larger turbo instead of trying to upgrade the stock one...

Get some injectors and tunes in there and throw on a D66? or H2E setup and you'd be a lot better off...

Steve you would be incorrect about the intake side upgrade. To get it to spool faster you decrease the size of the exhaust housing, stock is 1.15 A/R and the smallest is .89 A/R.

OP- as falcon said I would go with a tuner gauges bigger sticks and then a turbo. Upgrading the stock turbo is kinda like trying to polish a turd...at the end of the day you are still holdin a turd. The journal bearings in the stocker are only good for 35-40psi and they won't live for long at those levels.

Okay then lol on ym budget whats a good upgrade turbo thats a decent price, not cheap just decent. And thank you guys.

Edit: Also, thanks to DieselPower magazine, I got the idea... Does any company or someone make a compound turbo kit for 7.3's like mine? If so point me in there dirrection, like to get an idea. Plus I want to get a tune, some bigger injectors, and a better turbo setup, I really want a compound setup. Anyways thanks in advance guys.

Havn't heard of any compound setups for our trucks... the D66 turbo is a good upgrade and a decent price. Less than a H2E as far as I know.

But opening up the exhaust and intake and tunes is a good place to start. Later on injectors and turbo upgrade.

For just under a grand you can get a dominator 66 (D66) from beans deiesel performance. And they are rated for up to stage II's. And nobody makes a compound setup for the OBS anything that you see is all custom. I would start with an exhaust intake and tinder an go from there, I'm guessing it will really surprise you.
