Please explain why

I have posted some problems I was having with my E4od . I am getting a code 62 converter clutch slippage. This intern causes hard shifting betwwen 2to3 and 3to4th gear. I am told that I need a new converter. My question is this: How come the tranny shifts good until the trans warms up? Is this because the fluid is thicker when cold? What about a type F fluid (no friction modifiers). Would this help with the TCC slippage? I am trying to not do the trans work since the truck is 20 yrs old and only driven 2k mile per year. Thanks

Just let it go, if you only drive it 2k a year, drive it till it quits. Converter codes and converter slippage is a common problem with your year model transmission. There are some updates and modifications to do to the pump to help prevent converter slippage, so until you are ready to rebuild it let it ride. It will probably last for years like that, just dont ride for long distances on the highway.

What do you consider long trips on the highway? I do one long trip a year (800 mile roundtrip)with about 1500lbs on-board . About 400 miles of that trip is 75mph on the highway. This why I am concerned about it. I do not want to break down, Would keeping the fluid cool add life to the converter? Thanks Sorry for the persistence>

I think that your once a year trip would most likely cause some serious overheating and could cause the transmission to fail and leave you stranded. Its time to decide whether or not to fix the truck, and be prepared to spend around the 2k mark to have it fixed with the updates and a decent converter.
I think your truck would be a good investment in repairing, also depending on who fixes it see if there warranty is transferable from owner to owner. This will add value to the truck and make it more attractive to someone if you chose to sell it.

When i drove it last year temps reached 220 degrees in the pan. Will those temps kill it? Do you know the reason the trans shifts good when cold? Nobody seems to be able to answer this.

220 is way hot, it wont last long with those temps.

The reason why it shifts fine cold is because the computer has not detected a problem with the transmission during that key cycle. When the computer finds a problem it raises the line pressure of the transmission to help prevent the clutches from slipping and it also inhibits lockup. I know you have had a question about the 1-2 shift still feeling normal and I am not sure why that is, there could be a number of reasons, the bottom line is it has a problem that will most likely result in having the transmission rebuilt.
