A buddy of mine has a F150 w/5.4 and when he tows he says he feels a big difference running prem gas. He has a 6k TT. So his truck is not over worked. Now I am going to tow my 10k TT (fully loaded)for the 1st time this weekend do you think I will notice a difference and should I run prem gas?
I have tried it running empty and found no diff in MPGs or seat of the pants feeling. So I dont want to waste the money if it wont make a diff.
Sorry to say but your buddy is full of it, UNLESS he installs a tune designed for premium fuel. I can maybe see him noticing a power increase if he has a new 09' F-150 5.4l that runs a different tune with higher octane fuel.(E85)
Running 89, 91, or 93 octane won't do anything for the V10 with stock programming unless your experiencing a high amount of spark knock. If your truck runs fine on 87 keep using it. My truck has always been content with 87 with the stock tune and with an 87 performance tune.
It's SORTA possible, but there has to be a pre-existing problem with his engine for it to happen. In case it's pinging, the knock sensor will cause the PCM to back off on the timing. Putting higher-octane gas in it, it'll stop pinging, and the PCM won't back off the timing, giving more power.
