Safe Trans temp?

With the 4R100, what should a normal operating trans temp be? I'm guessing 160-200. What would be considered an unsafe temp when towing etc?

Try not to get the trans over 220*, at that temp you are cooking it.

What/why are you asking this? You have the BANKS intercooler.

LOL, truck is also a 6spd. A friend was asking me. He was seeing 200-205 while towing his camper. I told him that it should be an okay temp but that I'd double check.

LOL. Ok. Tell him to get another trans cooler. That is very high for pulling his camper. I will run 150* pulling 15,000k. I have the Tru-cool cooler, some have a 6.0 cooler.

Diddo that. Pulling at that temp I would be nervous. Get into some hills and it will go up and over. I run 160/170max. And most times way lower

Rule of thumb for 4R100 tranny's - 60-100 degrees over ambient temps is normal with 220ish being redline.

My 6.0 tranny cooler lowered my temps at least 20-30 degrees. I run 40-60 over ambient temps without ever seeing 185 even pulling a trailer up some long steep mountain passes.

Wes, your question has been answered, but lemme add this, if he's not hauling/towing over 10K lbs, he'll be happy with the 6.0L trans cooler as an upgrade.

After I added the 6.0L trans cooler to my Excursion, I too saw a drop of 20 to 30 degree temps.

The temps were measured while pulling my travel-trailer into Yosemite (long, windy, uphill, narrow road with a 35mph speed limit, but real speed consistently changed from 15mph to 35, then back down) the first year I had my TT, my temps ran 210 -225 degrees. The two following years, when I had a JW built tranny, T/C lockup switch, and a 6.0L trans cooler, my temps ran 180 to 195 degrees.

I was seeing 190 - 205 around town towing 7k trailer. Installed tru-cool auxilary cooler in line with my factory cooler and it dropped tranny temps about 30 degrees across the board. I have yet to see over 165 when towing over cascades at gcvw of 19k.

2000 f250 4x4 hpx, 4" exhaust, gauges, filter upgrade, etc

About 100 over ambient is ok -- I get that empty on my stock cooling. I saw 195 yesterday just driving home from work (~23 miles). My 6.0L trans cooler is on the way though.

Here's a pic of my gauge (it was 99 yesterday). I'll take another after the bigger cooler goes in.

+1 on this, except I'm running a Tru-Cool inline with the factory cooler. I haven't ever seen 180.
