tailgate up or down?

tailgate up or down?
ive been putting my tailgate down for about the last 2 weeks or so in hopes to save a bit on gas, however ive been also getting mixed opinions that keeping the tailgate up gives you better mileage. had anybody calculated this? figured id put it out there. if it helps its a 94 150 with the 4.9 5 speed 4x4. thank guys.

Yeah, mythbusters explanation did make sense. I think they said have the tailgate up creates an air pocket in the bed so air flows directly over the back of the truck. If you have ever stuck your hand out the sliding rear window while you are driving you will notice there is very little wind in the back of the truck. Having the tailgate down does not allow this air pocket to form so the wind pushes down on the bed floor instead of over the truck. Thats why when I want crap like hay to blow out the back of truck, opening the tailgate makes it easier.

only reason to drive with tailgate down is so cops can't see your expired stickers. tailgate up or down makes no difference, you just stand a better chance of some clown running into your gate at the light because they diddn't see it

there are a lot of other variables that mythbusters didnt test though. stuff like different engine sizes, regular cab vs. extended cab, and 8 ft vs. 6 ft beds. these all make a difference.
and there is always room for those women on my tailgate. especially if Taylor Swift is with them.
