Hi guys & gals! I'm glad to be here, been lurking for a while and thought I would join ya. I have a 1949 Ford F1 that was heavily modified. It was made into a 4 wheel drive with jeep running gear. The rear axle was too wide and they used a cutting torch to make clearence. The front spring hangers were moved to the outside of the frame rails with lug nuts used as spacers. It has rust in all the regular places. I have a long, fun road ahead. I'll be asking alot of questions. Bob
Welcome to FTE Bob ; there is a lot of help here , stick around ,you'l be glad you did , they convinced me to after a rocky start. You have a good day now . JIM
Welcome Bob, good to have you here, what's your plan. It's a stealthy looking truck as it sits. You could likely find another rear axle from something like a Bronco that would fit better. There should be answers to any questions you throw out.
John
What do you plan to do beside's remove the lug nut spacers ,LOL . maybe you need more time to think on that? Yes it is a good forum allthough I almost left it last week , I came here expecting the same rude treatment I got at another forum. It's different, you'l see and helpfull . Looks like you are in TN. never been there but have been in N.C. I am way out in southwest IDAHO ,allmost in OR.
Welcome to FTE, Bob. Glad to have you. Glad to see another Bonus Built saved from the crush monster. Lots of good folks here and ready to help in anyway we can. Looking forward to following your project.
Thanks everyone. I'm not sure what i'm going to do.I found a 51 front axe to go under it. I have a rebuilt 351 w c-6 combo,a 96 explorer-302 4speed overdrive-all wheel drive that I could put my body on.The 49 frame is cracked from the bottom of the c to near the top-p.o. had put power steering out in front of the front axel.I'm repairing the body now. rebuilding the bed(thanks Bobbytnm).Ill tryto put some more photos in my galery later
Havi, It had a ford overhead valve inline 6 cyl. engine in it its not a 240 or 300 and it is blown. A 3 speed top loader trany and a N case rear carrier. The rear axel is about 6 to 8" to wide. All in all the sheet metal is workable.I'm inthe process of rebuilding the bed. The inner bed frame is rusted into.
Do you want to keep it as a 4 x4? The frame sounds not so good. Most of us take the cab, front end and box off and either restore/overhaul the original frame or modify it with upgraded brakes and steering etc (Sorry Joe) What came to mind after reading your post was if you are not going to 4 x4 it, you are halfway there already, find another frame, build it the way you want it and then move the body over, it doesn’t sound like fixing the one you have is worth the effort? Of course I probably out to lunch (again).
Sounds like a hodge podge of non original parts. No problem getting the right ones. As for the frame, my first truck had over a dozen cracks, half a dozen bends, and 3 rotted out areas so thin the sandblaster would have made it disappear. So I got another truck that had a better frame. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 trucks to make one good one. Good luck!
Bobby,
Wow thats a tough looking old truck! It's a shame they cut the back fenders up. I'm betting they probably used the same care and attention to detail to cut a radio hole in the dash too huh? LOL
An easy fix for the rear axle is to find a 9" from a 1972 an older Ford truck. They are the correct width and bolt right in. On the 66 and earlier rear axles you might have to weld on some shock mounts but that is pretty minor.
Good luck with it. I'm hoping to get back to work on my truck pretty soon, I haven't touched it in months
