C6 trans cases: are they the same?
Thanks

The detent spring system is different. Not sure what year it was changed, but it was early 80's. The detent spring is the spring pressure you feel when you move the gearshift and it moves the shift lever on the side on the trans.
Early models have a coil dentent spring that is mounted on the valve body. Later models have a leaf spring/roller design. The case for the leaf spring type has a boss cast in the case for the bolt to hold the spring. Early model cases do not have this cast in boss and late model valve bodies do not have the place for a coil spring.
You can use an early model valve body and detent spring in a late case becasue it carries it's own spring. You can't use a late valve body in an early case because there is no palce to bolt the spring.

In my 71 f250 , We are shortening frame 16" , and we are transplanting a 351W /stroked 408.
Question 1 ) What would be the public opinion here swapping in a "AOD" {NOT {{E}} that would be rebuilt updated etc. I don't want to step intp a electronic trans and have to deal with adapter plates nor stand alone TCU after. Truck gearing is 3:53, and will be running a 32-33 inch tire.
I'm going to be stuck with a small fuel tank, and do NOT want to be stopping at gas pump every 200 miles so I really feel I need to think of over drive trans..
Item 2) More than likely I'll be faced with length issues of first drive shaft (between trans and carrier ) , and obviously 2nd driveshaft since we are shortening frame . Question ?? Is this a point where I can get away with a new single driveshaft?
Thank you
You can use an AOD read this first. HOW TO: Changing Carburetors and Making it Work with an AOD - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums (ford-trucks.com)
You can use a one-piece driveshaft consult with the driveshaft shop first the longer they get the bigger diameter they have to be.
