Rebuilding 86 D60 front

What's up people?
I have a 1979 F-250 w/460, C-6 tranny with an NP205. I have a Dana 60 front axle (1986) and an older sterling rear... The PO said everything is good to go... I drove it and the front seemed kinda loose but the motor/tranny/t-case all shifted and functioned nicely. The only thing that sucks is the gear ratios, 3.54 front and 3.55 rear...... I think??? Anyway, I decided to rebuild the front axle with new seals/bearings/gasket/rotors and kingpins. Now, here is where I may have messed up. When I rebuilt it I never installed the splash shields for the rotors. The old ones were so rusted that I couldn't re-use them and I couldn't find anything locally. Will this have any major affect on handling/performance or parts wearing out faster?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes and no.
The yes part... they funnel air into the brakes to keep them cool, and blow out the brake dust

The no part.... they keep dirt out a(but they also hold dirt)

Cool...... I appreciate the quick reply. I'd hate to yank the outers off again. But, if I have to I will just for ease of mind and good practice.
I'll be running the H1 12 bolt beadlocks mounted on 37" goodyears.
I noticed that the old shields were roughly .040" thick and seeing that these axles are floating I was curious if this would play any games with abnormal wear etc...... If anything I guess I could put a washer roughly the thickness of the shield behind the snap ring...... Any thoughts?

Most people just leave them off after a rebuild for a couple of reasons:

1) they are expensive to replace @ around $57.00 each IIRC
2) they really don't serve any purpose IMO and only trap stuff inside

I wouldn't worry about the lack of the .040 if I were you either. It's not going to hurt anything by them not being behind the spindle.

The ONLY reason i would reccomend replacing them is to keep the brakes cooler, being you are running 37's. And especially if you are towing

Once again thanks guys! Towing... not likely, as she's going to be a trailer queen... she's going to be a mildly built trail rig... she'll see some mud/trails/rocks/plow some snow etc...
