I am posting this again in an attempt to clarify the problem I am having since there is alot of conflicting info on the E4OD. I have a 1990 F250 with 81k original miles throwing a code 62 (converter clutch slippage). Shifts hard ONLY when hot from 2to3 and 3to4 . 1to2 always shifts fine hot or cold. When cold it shifts fine through all gears. Shifts get harder as trans gets hotter. If I reset the code the trans still shifts improperly. My questions are this: If the line pressure were high wouldn't all gears shift hard? When the code is reset shouldn't the trans shift normally untill it detects a code again? Everyone points to the MLPS, I have no other driveablity, shifting or code problems and if it was at fault wouldn't it do it all the time hot or cold? Just trying to get some answers . Thanks
The reason the shifts get harsh is because the pcm sees a fault/slip and ir ranmps line pressure up to try and keep from leting the trans eat itself up.
I understand that the pcm raises the pressure on the code but what about the questions I asked above. What would be your best guess on the longevity of the trans with this condition? I drive it 2k per year.
What do you use the truck for during those 2k a year? If it's just easy driving around town then you might get a few years, if it's towing 10k in the mountians then it might die next week.
Mine had a slipping converter for a couple of months, and I had a hack trans shop do a "pressure riser resistor" mod that came loose, causing the line pressure to max out. With the increased line pressure it didn't slip until it got into OD. Hard shifts from gear to gear, with long soft TC lockup, but I could have nursed it around town for years. I wanted to do some camping this summer so I had it rebuilt, steel planets, bearing center support, extra clutches and a triple disc converter went in, $2400 went out...
Do you know why it would still raise the pressure one I clear the code? What about that the 1to2nd shift always shifts smooth. Shouldn't all gears be affected by the high pressure? What about the cold/hot differences in shifting? What is the reputation of AAmco transmission? Thanks
Id stay away from aamco transmissions.in my area they have a very bad rep.try a jasper reman with a triple disc billet converter.3year / 100 k warranty,or a ford reman that has the same warranty but dosnt come with a billit triple disc converter.
