Hey guys I'm a do it yourselfer and I'm taking a E4OD from a 91 f-250 7.3L diesel and swapping it with a rebuilt from the junk yard. I need some advice on any tips or tricks to make this go easier, so what ever you have let me know. Also what is the best way to disconnect the linkages for the shifters from the trans and the t-case? Thanks in advance Mike.
Only way I know to disconnect the linkage for the transfer case and shift arm for the transmission is with a prybar. They are a snap in nylon bushing, so if you pry as close to the connection as possible, they should pop out without bending or braking anything. To reinstall them, just clamp down with some pliers and they pop back in.
The electrical connector on the passenger side of the transmission needs special attention. You must NEVER use a screw driver or any other tools to remove it. Bare hands only....heres how you do it:
Remove the heat shield to get better access to the connector,
clean the area around the connector so you can see what you are dealing with,
On the side facing away from the transmission there is a button that you must press in with your thumb. While pressing this button in, you pull upwards on the wiring harness. You may have to pull from side to side a little while pulling up to get it to pop out.
It should pop out right when you least expect it, lol.
If you find that the thumb tab is broken off, then chances are some one else tried the screw driver method at some point. The connectors can be replaced for under $20 in most cases. FTE parts guy might even have it.
