Another 5er thread
A friend just bought a KZ Inferno 5er (about 13k lbs loaded) and thinks he needs his tranny rebuilt or at least an upgraded torque converter because he isn’t happy with the way his trans is shifting and not holding the lockup long enough. He’s got a 99.5 F350 with 4 inch exhaust with about 160k miles, never really towed anything. Currently running a Superchip. I told him to get rid of that and go with a DP after letting Jody know his upgrades and mods. Much cheaper and if the trans needs rebuilt, at least he’s got the correct tuner. I haven’t ridden with him during a tow but was wondering if I’m steering him in the right direction. Let me know if I gave enough information.

Well I have an early 99 and when I put my new tranny and converter in with the DP it sure made a world of difference in towing anything especially my 5'er. I think you are pointing him the right direction. I know if it is still his original tranny that he will be replacing it sooner or later if he has 160k on he has done real well.
My 5'er is about 14,500 loaded. I dont fill my water tanks until I get close to where I am going just to try and keep the weight down some.

I just towed my 11k lb 5'er about 730 miles last night. I have a 99.5 with a bts valve body, dp-tuner 60t and a stock converter. Only had to get out of it 3times going up hills in Wisc. Of course if I didn't have the cruise set at 70 and more like 62 I probably wouldn't have had to downshift at all. You gave him some good info.

I just towed my travel trailer which is 8200 lbs plus a tank of water, 3 big guys all our gear. we went about 350 miles and it tows like a completely different truck with the DP. Get that before a new tranny. Well worth the money
