ticking time bomb???

I wanted to post a thread to see if anybody else was having the same issue as I with the 5.4L 24v Triton V8 in my 05 Expy. The engine has a light metallic ticking sound to it that corresponds with the speed of the engine. At first I thought it was coming from the tranny/torque converter but I was wrong. I took it to the Ford dealer and they showed me a TSB saying something about the valve lash adjusters and that's just the way they were supposed to sound. Well the ticking drives me nuts. I just don't believe that an engine should make metallic noises like that. Has anyone else had this problem? If so, was it fixable??? Thanks!

Piston slap, it's common with the 5.4. Nothing to worry about, but I agree it's irritating.

I have the same problem, i was told it has to do with some solinoids on the heads and is caused by the solinoids being clogged with sluge and using the wrong viscosity oil. I use 3/30 castrol synthetic. I was told that I needed to run Lucas that is compatible with synthetic oil to clean the engine and solinoids and then i have to run 2/20 conventional oil only. it has something to do with the motor not being able to keep the pressure up at idle. I am going to tey this and see if that makes it quit

BTW, Its a 2005 Expy 5.4

Alot of wrong info in here

The ticking "diesel" noise is caused by the Cam Phasers. The 04-05 5.4 3v motor have a problem with them. It is NOT PISTON SLAP...nor is it necessarily a sludge issue

Btw, only use 5w20 oil in the 5.4 3v engine. Anything else, and your are risking damage. Also, use the Motorcraft FL-820s Oil filter. Ithas an improved anti-drainback check valve...other brands of filters are substandard comparitively

A loud set of Cam Phasers can be annoying...but that aren't exactly bad either. Plenty of guys run 'em for a really long time without issue. But, they do occasionally fail prematurely

To fix, you are gonna spend several grand...so IMO, a replacement motor is a better more viable option. Especially if you already have higher mileage.

These CAM PHASERS, are the things at the front of both of the valve covers. I have a friend, reputable mechanic, that said most of the time they cam be cleaned, worst case is to replace them. I was running Sythetic 10/30 but at his suggestion, I just changed to the 5/20 oil. he said drive it like that for awhile and it should quiet down. If not They may need to be replaced.

It's not always the phasers or piston slap.It could be a defective follower. Replacing a bad follower is about $20 in parts. Leave it alone until it fails, and it can cost you far more than $1000.

Thanks man. Took it to the shop today, it was the phasers. Good thing the extended warranty covers it! That's a pricey job.
