Blueberry Recipe's

What do ya all do with blueberries.

I usually freeze several gallon bags to use throughout the year. First I spread then on a cookie sheet and throw them in the freezer, then once frozen, the little marbles stay seperated once bagged. They make great little icies, I eat 'em like popcorn during the summer, refreshing.

I've tried various recipes for drinks but can't seem to find that one perfect drink. So far, blending them with water and pouring over ice is my first choice.

We don't have any blueberry's grown around here. But if we buy them from the market, the Mrs likes to make a desert called blueberry supreme. Sort of like a cobbler. When we go to Michigan, wild blueberry picking is pretty common. Never really done that though.

Blueberry ice
2 cups fresh blueberries (from three 1/2-pint containers)
1 cup water
5 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
Stir blueberries, 1 cup water, and sugar in heavy medium saucepan over medium-high heat until sugar dissolves. Boil until berries are very soft, stirring occasionally, about 5 minutes. Strain mixture into small bowl, pressing on solids to extract as much fruit as possible. Mix in lemon juice. Cool to room temperature.

Place pan with frozen pops on work surface; carefully fold back foil over each cup without dislodging stick. Spoon blueberry mixture into cups, dividing equally (generous 3 tablespoons each). Reseal foil. Freeze until pops are frozen solid, about 8 hours. (Can be made 2 days ahead. Keep frozen.)

Remove foil, then tear or use scissors to cut cup off each pop; return ice pops to pan and freeze until ready to serve.

Blueberrytini
2 oz Triple Sec
2 oz Blueberry Vodka
1 dash Sprite
2 oz Blueberry juice

Directions
Combine the Smirnoff blueberry vodka, triple sec and blueberry juice in a cocktail shaker half-filled with ice cubes. Shake well and strain into a cocktail glass. Top with Sprite, garnish with fresh blueberries.

BTW I hate blueberries. My Amish family pick them for me every year and I freeze em and make pancakes or muffins when I make breakfast for motel.

Crush them, add a little sugar and allow to ferment for a bit, then filter and drink.

Thanks for all the comments and please keep them coming.

Moose, that first one sounds like it would be good over ice. The second, I prefer grapefruit with my vodka.

Stormy, how long do they need to ferment? I've never fermented anything before that I know of. Then, do you drink it straight or mixed with some seltzer water or something?

I love blueberry's along with pretty much any type of berry or fruit, but with a blueberry farm next door and dozens wild of bushes on our property, blueberries are the easiest (a/k/a cheapest) for me to get.

Fermentation depends on temperature, teast contenrt and sugar content. You would need to seal the container and put a bubbler vent on it to keep out unwanted yeast and bateria. also depends on how high of an alcohol content you want. leave it too long and you start making vinegar. I would guess on average without testing about 3-6 weeks. put it through a mister coffee filter and drink what goes through straight. This works well with apple cider right from the press.
apple cider I usually make twenty gallons and put in plastic milk jugs and leave in the chest freezer over night. Bottle and drink what don't freeze, toss the rest.
without making vinegar, naturally fermentation tops out at about 12-13% alcohol, to go above that you need to distill or freeze out the water to boost the alcohol content.

Being from Maine where Blueberries are one of our cash crops, we rack them not pick them.

Muffins, hot cakes, cobblers, cakes, ice cream topping, tortes, etc.

Try this website: www.allrecipes.com

This site will do the math for you if you change the number of serving to prepare.

I have used both vanilla ice cream and vanilla frozen yogurt when making smoothies for the kids. Just put it in the blender and mix thouroughly. My daughter loves it when we make them. We also do the same with strawberries. I ad a bit of milk to both so thin it out a bit.
