Adjusting timing

Obviously by my post count I'm a newbie. My last few vehicles have had coil packs instead of distributors and my last vehicle that did have a dist. was an 87 IROC Z camaro (I know big mistake, young and dumb) and you had disconnect a wire to adjust the timing or the computer would readjust it back to were it was. So that leads me to my question is there one on this truck (96 F150 302 fi) or do you just loosen the dist., adjust, and retighten? Also what would be a good timing to set it at?
One final question is, is there a common problem with these trucks running rich? It has thrown no codes. We've replaced plugs, wires, etc, but still running rich. This is what's making me think the timing might be a little off.
Thanks in advance
Wes

you have to pull the SPOUT connector in order to time the truck. Not sure on o 5.0 Maybe on the drivers fender. Looks like this

The gray thing that plugs into a 2 wire connector

My 92 F150 with a 302 had a problem with running rich. Tried lots of things. It ended up being the Fuel pressure regulator. Wasn't any fuel in the vacuum line but after I replaced running great. $25 at O reilly's. Sounds like its a common problem on these trucks.

Read the vacuum sticker under your hood, it tells you about timing.

Will the computer allow the timing to be adjusted or will it try to set it back to factory. Obviously this is a 96 with obd II

No the computer will not.

The Computer adjust the timing based on the base timing you set with the SPOUT out.

The Computer always thinks you have it set at 10 degrees BTDC so it will adjust it from that point.

If you do not set to 10 BTDC the the computer will adjust the timing wrong by the amount you have it set from that point. Some will fudge a little and set it at maybe 12-14 BTDC but the engine may ping at that setting and you will have to run Premium Fuel in the engine. This is what a lot of the chips do that some put in the back of the computer and that is why you have to run Premium Fuel with them.

Would my '93 F250 7.5L have this same connector and would I use the same procedure?

The spout is in the TFI harness so it depends what year the truck is, pre '92 or there abouts had the TFI module on the distributor while on later trucks it was moved to the driver side inner fender. There's nothing wrong with setting the base timing higher than 10deg, it will just take some experimentation to see how much the motor will take on whatever grade gas you typically run. My 5.8 would take 17deg but some stock trucks can barely tolerate 12 deg, every motor is different.
