fuel line broke!

so i just got back from a trip and realized my truck was running a bit strange when i finally got home i noticed that the fuel line going to the first injector on the left hand side was spouting out diesel when ideling so i figured it might have backed out a bit and worked its way loose since i did the fuel return kit not to long ago as i was trying to remove the nut the line actually broke. so hopefully tommorow ima hit up the local salvage yard to see if i can find the line that broke my question is if i can not find this line can a hydraulic line be used instead?

the line inside diameter and length are critical to the engine timing... that's why they snake all over the place... to maintain equal length on them all.

I believe it's difficult to find the proper diameter line and the equipment to flair it... someone once said it's a thicker gauge steel line than you can normally find... but I'm not too sure.

But if you had the proper line and tools to flair it.... no doubt it would work, as long as you kept the same length. But you would be better off finding a used one or try ebay.

That would be one tough flaring tool . These lines are nearly solid and the kind of steel they are is kinda brittle that is the reason if the little keepers holding the lines together are removed you have trouble with vibration breaking them.

Midwest Fuel Injection has prices about as good as any for a new line if needed.

Just so happens that a fuel line on my '01 7.3* popped a leak last weekend. Turns out the line (I think it runs to the filter) running across the top of the engine near the back is clamped there and the clamp wore through the line due to vibration and a loose fit. For some reason the line is not wrapped under the clamp, so it is metal-to-metal sliding friction all the time the engine is running (lots of vibration, ya know?). WHat the heck is wrong with the Ford engineers that they don't put a nylon sleeve or something under the sleeve?
By the way, the new OEM part cost $60. Not enough to worry about, and since the failure was due to abrasion I would recommend you look very closely at the area under any clamp the old line may have had. This one was worn "baaad".

Good info, but I'm afraid you are in the wrong forum. You have a powerstroke engine and this is the pre powerstroke forum. Vurtually nothing is shared in common between the two engine types.

i have forgot to post, but after i took a trip to the yard i found that most of the idi trucks that had been out there had been crushed, so i managed to find the number 1 injector line at the stealer ship ... the price was something around $30-34 bucks
