yesterday there was a freak rain storm so me and some friends decided to head up the moutain and play in the rain alittle. i went up a big hill and ended up having to back down it. some how my ******* backed off the road at the bottom of the hill into a ditch lol
at first i tryed going forword up the hill but that wasnt happening with the open rearend i was just spinning one front tire and one rear and getting nowhere. my hitch was hitting on the edge of the ditch/road. i was able to rock it alittle and back out of it but i bent my bumper alittle and filled my hitch full of dirt/rocks.
if i had been in my old daily driver though i dont think i woulda made it out on my own, thats why i love my excursion!
you could see the black rain clouds coming over the moutains
the "trick" in a case like this is to have REAL "all wheel" drive. We LIKE to say our EX's are FOUR wheel drive, but in fact, given the nature of differential gears, our FOUR wheel drives are actually TWO wheel drives, and TWO wheel drive vehicles are actually ONE wheel drive vehicles, in ANY condition where you get less than perfect traction.
There are a number of ways to get true ALL wheel /FOUR wheel drive. Most of them are pretty damn expensive, and, unless you are in really slippery conditions a lot, there is a FREE alternative. I call it POOR MAN's ALL WHEEL DRIVE.
Here's what you do. When the wheels start slipping under load on slippery stuff...GENTLY start applying the brake. The wheels that WERE slipping will gradually slow down, transferring PART of their power to the wheels that were not turning at all.
PRESTO - ALL wheels are now delivering power, and unless you are REALLY stuck, you will drive right out.

I will have to try that one. Definitely a poor mans real 4WD.
Looks like some more money to spend on some mods are in your future. I added the true trac to the back end to get rid of my open rear diff problem. Some open tread mud tires added to that and presto, time to go and have fun.
i've decided i wont lift this truck much, and stay with stock sized tires.i bought the exucrsion to be my comfy, new, reliable, daily driver. but i will be going with a semi agressive tire. after this thought i remebered how much i hate open diff's. i'm debating on a locker or maybe a LS i havent decided yet. i know i really hate how open diff's act in many situations, when pulling out in traffic..ect i allways get the "one wheel wonder" thing going on. plus in the winter i'm used to being able to power slide thru corners, with both back tires spinnin.
If you are looking for tires I'd suggest Toyo Open Country M/T's. They are fairly expensive but give great traction, a quiet asphalt ride, and are long lasting. I've had them on my Ex for two years and put 20,000 km on them and they've only wore 2/32nds on the tread. Also they handle really really well on gravel roads; even at high speeds .......... the RCMP told me so

i'm a cooper tire fanboy, plus we get a great deal at the local cooper dealer. i have cooper discover STTs on my explorer i wanna go with somthing alittle less agressive this time. i've been eyeing the cooper discover ST for summer. winter i'll be using cooper discover M+S studded.

I've got the STT's on my Bronco - fantastic tire! Makes some noise but straight exhaust doesn't really allow you to hear much of that.... Don't think I'd want it on a daily driver - especially a tow vehicle.
Has anyone used the Mickey Thompson ATZ radial or the Nitto Grapplers? The ATZ and the Terra Grappler are both available in load range E and in stock sizes. The Nitto Dune Grappler is available in a 285 load range E but not sure I want to change the size.

I can vouch for the TruTrac -- I had put that in my mustang and it made a world of difference when I dropped the hammer on the supercharger not to mention if I had to take it out on a rainy day it really made the rear a lot more predictable... I'd love to put it on the Ex - but the wifey has me back on a budget -- lol

I got lucky and was able to use my tax return for upgrades.
The wife saw on the last weekend some ARB bumpers on a superduty, and I asked her how she liked the look.. Her comment, "I can't wait till you get them, so I can move anyone and anything out of my way, oh, and make sure you get the matching rear bumper too."

It is nothing short of amazing how capable Excursions are off road. The wheelbase and weight transfer have a lot to do with their abilities. I'm moving to Alaska very soon. Not having good wear with my Toyo MTs but they're the best tire I've ever run. You'll hate a locking differential in the snow, you'll go all over the place around corners as it locks and unlocks with throttle and slippage. Go with either a limited slip or ARB. I'm planning to go ARB front and rear before I head North. How is the fuel in Anchorage? Ever any gelling?
