I have a 96' F-350 4x4 with 145,000 miles & just lost 2nd gear in my E4OD. I took off from a light & it run thru 1st gear but when it hit 2nd it acted like there were no gears in there for it to catch on,the tach jumped upuntil I feathered it into 3rd & it was fine after that. Does anyone know of a good reman or someone who rebuilds these. I have priced Jasper & they want $2250 exchange.
Consider yourself lucky in a bad way. I have 70,000 miles on my 90 Bronco and my 2nd gear for my E40D just went. I assume you know that it was the clutch packs that went. You can verify that by smelling the fluid to see if it smells burnt and the ATF will be a darker brown/black/red color. If you pull the tranny pan there will most likely be a black residue in the pan. Anyway, I was quoted $2155 for a 3yr, 55,000 mile complete rebuild to $950 at Phoenixhardparts.com although the shipping is expensive plus they require a core for that price that you must ship to them so shipping cost adds up fast, I was quoted $1800 at another shop with a 6mo, 6,000 mile warranty. Good Luck.
