Intermittent O/D off switch
When loaded with the truck camper and pulling the boat I use the O/D lockout switch occassionally. On our last trip it would work intermittently needing multiple pushes to lockout but only one push to engage. Is this something as simple as the switch? I am betting the O/D off light is from some type of limit switch in the tranny letting the user know that it is indeed off. Anyway, I did a search with not much luck so I am hoping someone here has some ideas.

The switch tells the PCM to turn off OD. The PCM lights the OD light. The trans isn't involved!
Usually when your problem happens it is one or more broken wires in the steering column where the wires exit the end of the shifter handle.

You can either repair the wires or replace the shifter. The new shifter comes with the wire harness installed for about $50. It plugs into the harness in the column. It's not hard to change the shifter, either.

Repaired broken wires from shifter and all seems great! It seems Ford puts a clip to hold the wires in place kind of close to the shifter and that seems to cause stress on the wires at that point so I left it off this time.It seems like it would be real easy for auto thieves to prey on these trucks, all you would need is a switch from a auto salvage yard with a key, pop out the ignition switch, plug in new one and away they go.
