Its time for ball joints etc, on my 2002 FX4. This will be my first time for ball joints on the truck, 119K still with the originals but the left side is starting to go. My question, are these kits you can find on ebay etc that sell the ball joint, tie rods, etc all in one pack for about $200 a worthy part, or are they junk? What are good brands and or where to find them, besides Moog which is supposed to be good quality just more pricey? Ive used Moog before on a previous vehicle. Thanks for any input!
The stuff on ebay is junk I put all new ebay ball joints on my truck and 6 months later had to replace them with moog. I would have to say, either go with ford or moog. The nice thing about moog is they are greasable. Ck online and you can find moog for a decent price. With how much a pain in the a** it is to replace the ball joints on these trucks, might as well do it right the first time.
Don't forget when you do the BJ's to put in the camber/caster kit on the upper control arm. That way you get a PROPER alignment and it's already torn apart. Just 4 new bolts to put in and bam, ur done.
i just did balljoints on my truck and through a supplier that i know with a discount i was lucky to get all the MOOG ball joints for $256, that didn't include the tie rod ends, sway bar end links, pittman arm, or idler arm if that's what you meant as a kit.
i would say good luck on trying to find them cheaper, the lower ones were about 40 a piece then the uppers which come with the a-arm were around 80.
if you plan on doing it yourself start early and don't plan on doing anything else, the second side will definitely go faster than the first.
Thanks for all your replies! Thats what I wanted to hear, ebay kits were good or junk! Looks like ill prob stick with Moog unless I can find Ford parts cheaper. After 119K and the truck has had a body lift w 35s on it for 50K, Id say the originals did pretty well! Thx again!
Thanks guys, I will check both of those sites before buying. Im getting real close to buying, starting to notice excess wear on the left front. Luckily I have a 2nd vehicle, trying to keep the miles off of it before I change them.
I just had all Moog installed in my front end today, new tie rod ends, pitman arm basically told him all the rubber in the front i want it out and new installed. 4 wheel alignment and front brakes, turn the rotors as well. Out the door $1300. I pick her up tomorrow so we'll see what happens. I know on the driver side upper BJ, I could damn near stick my finger up inside of it. It was completely shot. They were the originals and lasted 116k with a 3" suspension on 35's for a good 100k of that or better.
