Motor has been sitting in the shop for a couple years, getting ready to put it in, and i decided to do an oil change while it was out, And the oil is gray. There is water sitting in the heads (on top of the oil). What i would like to know is the easiest way to get the moisture out of the engine. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
How does an engine get oil mixed with water sitting in a shop ?
Without it running... you would have to just use cotton rags (towels, wash cloth's) to soak up what you can...
But running you could have just changed the oild a few times after it was warm...and you would be able to get it out..
But Grey Oil sounds like someone put a can of engine restore in it on the last Oil change when it was in the vehicle ? I have never seen Grey Oil, accept when it was loaded with shiney metal particles !! and those motors were Gone!
The Moisture got there because i live in oregon, and the engine has been sitting in the shop, the shop gets damp during the winter (not too bad but enough) and when everything heats up the whole thing sweats and everything gets damp. This motor was a strong runner so i know it isn't from metal particles, maybe i should take a pic of the head to show what i mean.
Picts would surely help with opinions. How do the valve springs, valves, keepers etc.. look ? While it's out I'd put it on a stand and pull the pan/VCs at least and see what things look like.
If the engine had enough moisture on it to pool water on the heads, it may have had enough to leak down into one of the cylinders through the carb. make sure you give each cylinder a good squirt of oil or Marvel Myster Oil (not too much tho) to ensure the cylinder walls are coated really good, if any water did leak down there, that cylinder could be toast!!
I would probably spray everything down with some marvel mystery oil to displace any water, let that drain out, throw in some fresh oil, then make sure to change the oil soon after the engine has ran a few times.
Don't forget to prime the oil system either before you fire her up!
I think before I installed it...I would put it up on the engine stand...put some good top oil in the cylinders and turn the crank by hand quite a few times....then put a battery to it and some fuel..Lite it up just pass warm and drain the Oil.. and do that a couple times raising the engine temp each time intil you dont see any trace's of water in the system..and pull and install a new filter every time..then pull the rockers covers and look for any traces of water ! JMO... SeaFoam works great in the Gas Tank for water..But I have never tried it in a block?
