What oil does everyone use?

I'm looking at using the Rotella 15W40 or the 5W40. Does that meet the Ford requirement?

Doing the first oil change tomorrow on my new (used) truck.

only if it is CJ-4 rated for diesels, so check it out on the label.

I used Rotella T in my 6.0 but couldn't find CJ-4 Rotella when I got my 6.4 and started using Delo 400. I get my oil checked buy Blackstone every other change. All's well and they suggest I could go much longer between changes. (currently every 5k miles). BTW, the oil turns black very quickly, within the first 500 miles. Don't know if this is true for all 6.4s or the kind of oil contributes.

Thanks guys. With the Rotella is there any reason to run the 5W40 synthetic? Down here in the south I'd prefer to run the 15W40 because of the heat...

Got a good part number for the filter? The Wal-mart doesn't always have a book to look it up.

It has been suggested that the NAPA filters are the ones to use if you don't go OEM.

Sounds good. All of NAPA's stuff is made by Wix.

Which filter housing under the hood is which? I know one is fuel and the other is oil, but which is which before I unscrew the wrong one? According tot he book the driver's most housing is the fuel.

I also have some other maintenance related questions. If you guys could answer them I'd appreciate it.

Do I keep the fuel coolant reservoir full to the middle of the sight glass? I assume the gold coolant is what to use in there?

Do I need to change both fuel filters at the same time? Or does the frame mounted unit get changed more frequently?

Where is the transmission filter? Isn't it external on these trucks? Does the torque converter have a drain plug? Or is it best to have the filter changed and the fluid flushed?

Thanks,

so many questions....so little time!

Change both fuel filters at the same time. Refer to this thread I had done when I changed mine:https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...maintance.html

Yes it is the one closest to the driver.

Fuel coolant res. takes the same as the motor, I have mine completely at the top of the sight glass.

I would not put a wix filter on my truck, fit is not so good, better to use the motorcraft and be done with it. The kit will have both the rail and under the hood filer in it as well as the new o-rings.

There were a few that had external trans filters, most likley if you follow the lines and don't see it then internal only. Best to take it in for the trans svc. They can heat the fluid so that it all comes out to include the torque converter. It has the thermostat so it has to be heated to flush it out.

Do I have to wait for the engine to cool before I pop the cap on the coolant res?

Have you guys seen this? I know it's old but I had a NAPA gold in my 6.4 and saw this video. The competitor "A" in this video I am confident is the NAPA filter. So I switched it out for the Motorcraft it's not worth the risk in my book.

I would stick with a Motorcraft oil filter. It is a FL-2016 oil filter. Best price for filter and oil is wally world. I prefer either Rotella T 15w40, or Motorcraft 15w40. Just my humble opinion.
