Head Removal

91 F250 7.3 IDI 260,000

The first glow plug on the drivers side swellled up and broke off upon removal. Its now time to pull the head, does anyone have any words of wisdom or special things to be aware of or to look out for?

I've read that the valley pan should be replaced at this time, is this true?

This truck has the original injector pump on it. Not having any problems but would this be a good time to replace it?

I will be replacing all 8 glow plugs at this time, which brand is best?

tks
David

Yea, It's easier and can be accomplished better and faster if you pull the motor and do it. The heads are heavy and awkward!

IP's are pretty easy to change at any time.

Motorcraft/Beru

It is also a good time to pull the oil cooler and reseal it as well.
It's a bear in the truck with exhaust manifolds on.

It is mandatory you replace the valley pan it is a once and done crush item..... ie the sealing areas around the inlet ports is crushed and will not give a secure seal again. Quite often small cracks may be found in the corners.

As suggested removal of the engine is easier especially if it is the pax side (USA) head.

When removing the head.... remove the head bolts in reverse torquing order, 1/8th of a turn per bolt ......per rotation of the torquing sequence. IE 17 down to one, then again and again until head bolts are loose. Usually about 3 times around the pattern. Why .....it has been found that head cracking can happen if persons just start in one place and work helter skelter across the head.

Injection pump (old) are usually replaced as a pair with injectors........ so if it is not time and it works good leave it alone.

GPs required are Beru/motorcraft ZD9 Azone online had a fire sale on them couple weeks back..... check with your local store.

Or you can get them......

$9.99

Better price....

It's easier to *not* remove the timing gear in front of the IP, as it will lose time. Someone else here can explain how to get the pump loose -- I've only done it the hard way.

If you choose to leave the motor in the truck, you'll need a hoist to reinstall the heads anyway unless you're super strong and don't mind buying a few extra head gaskets...

Ditto on Motorcraft/Beru only, they don't swell up!

With the information being most likely in pdf format, email is the best way to send the info.

Posting in the forum or PM requires retyping everything, and if their are any pictures, they are lost.

More than once I have the info in .pdf form, but if the users email is not enabled I have no way of sending it to them.

I have a few that I have retyped over the years, but if the document is long, I type way to slow.
