I bought a couple of oil filters from the dealer so I would be ready for my next 2 oil changes. I didn't look at them until I got home but they are different from each other. The one on the left is what I normally get, the one on the right is smaller and lighter but has all the same numbers on it. Did Ford change manufacturers?
I know I have seen "new design, same performance" on the boxes of the new filters at wally world. Havn't heard of any manufacturer change or difference in the filters.
It's more than likely the same filter that they would like you to use on the FL820S applications. If you read somewhere in the manual or in the parts and service area of the dealer it says that ford keeps on improving their parts to perform better and keep up with updated technology, a change in the design of the oil filter is probably a good thing.
I noticed the difference Monday when I changed the filter on my '08. I put the old filter in the box that the new one came in and it was sticking out. Bobby I looked for the thread and had trouble finding it. Would you please post a link?
I wish Ford would work more on putting out a 6qt jug of oil instead of shortening filters. I see the geniuses now have a 5.25qt jug, wonderful because none of my 3 modulars take 5.25 qts, nor do they take 5.
That is my guess as to why they changed it, on the CV's and the Mustangs it is damn near impossible to remove unless you turn the wheels all the way to one side.
Speaking of the size of oil jugs. I went to buy some Mobile-1 at O'Reilly auto parts and the largest jug that they had was 3.25 qts. for $26. I thought BS and went to wallyworld and got the 5 qt. jug for $22.
I cut apart an old style FL-820s filter and noticed there was at least a 3/4" of space between the end of the filter cartridge to the center of the dome on the can. I havn't cut apart a a new shorter 820 but I suspect the filter cartridge is the same length they just reduced the can length. They probably shortened it to get more filters out of the same material length, but who knows. The new purolator pure one filters are the short ones also. There is a thread down in the oil and lubrication section.
Only thing is on some vehichles there may be a space issue.
They often make a product change to save money and stock fewer different versions to fit wider selection of models.
As far as the filter being just as good' it is, no worry.
Filters changed at 5 to 7,000 miles with the oil means that the filter will never get close to clogging or any filtering problem at those intervals.
If the filter gets anything close to being clogged then there is something in the motor that is wearing way too fast and you would have a problem in a relitivley short time.
Mine is at 118,000 miles with 5k change intervals and still like a new motor using MC 5w20 and the 820s filters.
If they shortened the filter to accomadate a certain vehicle then they need to change the vehicle not the filter. If the 820 being 5/16" longer interferes with other components then the design is way too close. You have to be able to get a wrench on the filter for removal and to get your hand in to spin the filter on. Of course engineers don't have to work on the vehicle so what do they care.
The filter casing are stamped out on a progressive die. If they shorten the case 5/16" that means they can save roughly 7/16"-5/8" (depending on elongation) of material on the length and width of the piece required for 1 filter. Saving 7/16'-5/8" of steel per filter equates to quite a few more filters per 1000' of sheetmetal. Just a theory of mine.
