Exclamation Old enough to smoke?

I have noticed lately that the truck puffs a bit of blue when I pull away from a stop after idleing for a while. It's not a lot of smoke about 3 feet round. It seems to do it when I pull away a bit heavy 1/2 throttle or so if I roll on slowly no smoke that I can notice. It also seems to be worse when I come down from highway speeds and the stop and take off again, it's not as bad around town between lights etc. It does not seem to do it as I warm up no puff on start up or as she warms just after it's up to temp and no smoke at idle. I am not noticing any hesitation or any running issues just this annoying blue puff. When I am running at city speeds and romp on it no puff or even on the highway when I go to pass someone I stand on it real hard and don't see any smoke, just from a stop it seems. I have 163,000 kms. on the truck and do the oil every 5000 kms. Put a code reader on it and nothing showed up? Running rottella t 15-40 dino oil. Tried to look in the archives but nothing seemed close to this problem. O-ring? ccv excess? injector going? Valve guides/seals? cac tubes really wet? With it not showing a code I kind of stuck where to start looking.

Ever cleaned the EGR valve? When you start it up in the morning after it has sat all night is it a little rough till it's ran for a few mins? Almost like a bad cold start..

EGR cleaned about a year ago, it wasn't really bad when I did it, it smooths out after a start in less than 10 secs.

That sounds like the EGR cooler is leaking..the smoothing out is the cyliiders burning off the coolant that leaked into them. You loosoing coolant? White spots around the fill cap?

There is no sign of white spots around the filler cap and the coolant level has been the same for well over a year, right between max. and min. on the tank. It takes less than 10 seconds to smooth out on a cold start and thats right down to almost freezing temps. Doesn't apply now as we are having nice warm weather, still smooths out vertually right away.

Blue smoke is oil consumption so unless you have an injector leaking oil into combustion chamber which should show up all the time then I would drop the exhaust clamp off the passenger side turbo and see if its wet at the bottom or if there is residue, I would venture to guess that unless you have a severly carboned up intake that the turbo shaft seals are leaking. Which explains why it only shows up when warm and the oil is more viscous and as you idle the oil builds up and then when you accelerate you are burning up the oil in the exhaust.

Now this makes sense to me; blue smoke is usually oil. Now which clamp are you suggesting I drop? The down pipe? Where am I looking for signs of oil? in the bottom of the turbo housing? Exhaust side?or intake side?

You should look on the downpipe side. Its 11mm size socket on the clamp or a 7/16". Just push the pipe back after you remove the clamp and look for oil residue, probably best to due when you know its smoking. Pipe will be hot of course but recreating the conditions will give you the best chance of spotting a problem.

From my experience I would agree this sounds like a turbo with bad seals... Turbo/oil is usually blue smoke, egr & cooler is usually white smoke.

Mine did the same thing under the same circumstances. It was the seals in my Turbo. 06 with 37,000 miles. Hope this helps.
