Changing/flushing power steering fluid???

How do you do it? I just changed a leaky hose and the fluid is pretty nasty looking. The pickup is a 1994 f-150 4x4. How can I manage to flush all the nasty stuff out and get clean fluid back in there?

It's easy with the Ford (plastic reservior) pump. Jack up the front end so you can turn the wheels easily. Remove the serpentine belt. Take the return line off at the pump. Fluid will come out so be ready with something to cap the nipple on the pump. Place the return hose in something to catch the fluid. An empty oil quart bottle works well. Now refill the pump with your choice of fluid. I use Type F ATF as that's what Ford calls for. Turn the pulley by hand and fluid will come out of the return hose. Keep doing this with the wheels in various positions until you're satisfied with the fluid coming out. I usually flush a couple quarts through. I've never had any problems with air getting in the system using this method, as long as it's never run dry while flushing.

Now if you have the Saginaw pump, it's a little tougher. I've never been able to get fluid to come out of the return hose turning it by hand. These pumps must take a little more rpm to move fluid.

This thread reminds me...I'm due for a power steering fluid change.

Thanks, that sounds simple enough. Will give me something productive to do tomorrow.
