advice needed on what to do with e40d
have posted several times over the past few months as my e40d in my 89 f350 diesel died. it is the third one in the truck's life and has only 5k miles since being remanned. shop guy that put it in says that the planetairy(?) gears are coming out. it showed very little evidence except when towing. shop says that the remann outfit that they got it from is now out of business and can't honor the warranty. he can't do anything except refund part of the purchase price. so now i have a perfect shifting remanned unit with 5k miles that growls like a bear when towing. now the 64$question.....do i scrap this tranny and go with another remanned unit say from jasper, or fix the planetairies? i am a very mechanical person and wouldn't be afraid of pulling the tranny apart and fixing it myself with a little coaching. may give me a little more confidence if i know what is in there. but another problem, where can i get the parts to make it bulletproof? i have seen some of the sites listed in this forum (phoenix hardparts and baumann) but they didn't really list parts and prices. besides, here in central north carolina, i haven't talked to a shop yet that would even consider a rebuild on this transmission. if anyone has any suggestions on any of these questions i would greatly appreciate hearing them.
thanks again,
scott
If you want to tackle it yourself you can use the planetary gearsets from a C6... They are the same....The input shell and sun gear assy are a little different...The engagement lugs in the shell are sort of round where as the C6 are square...The planets are the same however...One of the neat tricks for C6 guys is to install the lower ratio E4OD planets instead of gearing the rear end down...Hope this helps...

i am still collecting data and will make a decision shortly. can you recommend a good repair manual for this project? guess you have been into these before, would you fix the planets? anything else you would do while you were in there?
thanks again,
scott
