i was changing out a bearing yesterday morning and ended up demolishing a small fiber washer that sits behind the manual locking hub. after many stops allover town nobody could tell me where i could get one. none of the off roading shops, napa, ford dealerships, not even canadian tire...
was wondering if anyone else has encountered this problem? if they could tell me what they did, or if this piece is even really important. seems to be driving fine without it.? or if they know where to procure a new one without buying a whole new hub assembly
after i removed the first snap ring and then the maual hub. i didnt know there was a second snap ring to be removed, so i then attempted to use the hub locknut socket. it started to become resistant to removal so i looked inside and noticed shattered shards of something which i later learned was a fiber spacer washer that sits behind the spindle washer but infront of the hub locknut...
i later found the second spindle snapring... ooops!...
sorry i have no pics of it nor can i find any online...
There isn't any fiber washer back there. I don't think there are any fiber parts inside the locking hub either. If the hub works OK then I wouldn't worry about it.
My 95 auto hubs have this plastic washer. 95 did utilize the 3 bolt autohub as shown in above diagram.
Maybe you have an auto hub that has been converted to manual???
those are the exact hubs i have excpet for mine have the manual turn handle on the ront of them. you can rotate between free and lock. and then on the dash there are two buttons, 4x4 and 4x4low. it says that the piece im talking about is the plastic thrust washer, but it seems more fiber then plastic, and all the shops i went to refered to it as fiber not plastic, hence my vernacular.
Do you still have the large hexnut spindle nut?
If so, yours was converted improperly.
The hexnut was supposed to be converted over to the manual hub dual locknut style (or OEM ratchet nut for manual hubs).
If you convert over to manual hub style spindle nut, the plastic washer isn't included in the exploded diagram.
