Hi. I've referenced the board numerous times for general information however this is my first post. I have two issues - one led into the other I believe. My truck is a '86 150 4wd, I6,4spd, with an 8.8ls. Fairly basic - no power equipment or a/c, and a 6a mated to the TFI system. I rebuilt the engine and clutch less than 5 years ago and has never let me down until... First, while running the complete electrical system would go black. Nothing. Dash lights, gauges, radio (even though it's wired directly to the battery) completely cut out. If it sat for 10 min.or more she would fire right up. I checked the battery connections, ground connections etc.all fine no corrosion etc..After several trips on a roll back the truck fired right up at the garage thus they could not find the problem either. It has been sitting since the fall and when I tried to move it the left rear wheel is frozen when trying to pull forward, hovever, will roll freely in reverse??? Never seen any thing like it. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
sounds like the neg battery cable is going bad, especially where it bolts to the frame before it goes to the block. looking at it, and cleaning the ends won't help, the cable is probably corroded inside, and there is very little cable left. I say this because the headlights won't work as one of the symptoms. the hanging up brake is a normal thing for a vehicle that has sat for a while. rust builds up on the inside of the drum, and freezes the shoe. the primary shoe is larger, so it will go backwards first. it could also have brake fluid leaking out of the wheel cyl, which kinda acts like glue when soaked into the shoes.
Charlie thanks for the thoughts on the rear brakes I have not pulled the wheel yet - I've never encountered one that roll one way and frozen the other. I'll check the negative cable again. While rebuilding the motor I ground the attachment points to bare metal and I think the ground wire was replaced at the same time. I know it's not the original - lol.
