Looking for a power on ONLY when engine is running
Folks, I'm wanting to add driving lights to my wife's 01 Explorer. The lights are Ford and the Explorer didn't come with driving lights...I will be using a relay, I want the lights to be "automatic" and figure if there is some thing that is only energized when the engine is running there would be no real chance for battery drain etc.
check out the what is used for installing over the counter FOG lights, wire size, relays, switch if you want to control off and on (while running),and you can tie in to the head light system for power to run the relay power. Power for the lights comes from the battery. good luck
Thanks for the reply pbjohns ; I have the wiring and relay, I'm trying to find a "pilot"feed to trigger the relay. The missus' prior ride had "automatic" headlights and I liked that feature.I'm going at it like they're to be DRLs. I did a setup much like this on my '90 mustang using the coil feed to trigger the relay for set of driving lights till I could locate a headlight switch with the fog lights provision, except with her's the driving lights would be independent of the high beam cut out
I don't think you can limit it to engine running very easily, but I don't see why you cound't trigger it from the "ON" wire. When the key is int he on position, it energizes to circuits, the "ON" circuit, and the "ACC" circuit. Accessories are typically triggered by the ACC circuit, and are on in either the on position or the acc position. The ON circuit on the other hand is only on when the key is in the on position.
I don't see why you couldn't run them off the ACC circuit like other accessories. Just use a fuse tap as your trigger, find a fused circuit that is normally only on when the key is, and install the tap into that one. I would install a switch as well, which you could normally leave on, but would give you the option of turning them off.
