Good evening all,
I've just acquired a donor truck '76 F-150 460/c6. According to the VIN decoder it has a 3.25 Ford rear end. I have three questions.
1. Is this a 9"? It looks much 'beefier' than the rear end in my '72 F-100.
2. I've pulled the axles out and completely unbolted the 3rd member but it won't pull out,is there a trick?
3. The axle code is 15j, what does the 'j' stand for?
Thanks in advance for everyone's help.
Don W.
Getting it off is a pain! I just did this to my 78 F150 last week. I ended up using a pry bar and pounding it between the housing and 3rd member. I had to do it in three seperate places to break it loose. Be careful not to damage the gasket surfaces. As I was warned by someone else on this site, I'll warn you - It's HEAVY! Be careful! Oh, and it STINKS! I've never smelled any automotive fluid that smelled that nasty.
It sounds like a 9" to me, but I'm no expert. When you say "heavy duty", do you mean it's got extra webbing? I was under the impression that that was a tell-tale sign of a Ford 9". If I'm wrong, someone please correct/smack me.
9 inch is identified by if you can not get a socket and extention on bottom couple bolts - you use regular box end to loosen then it is a 9 inch. A 4 foot long pry bar and some serious swearing are usually required to get out. Care must be taken not to use too much force . Just be patient and it should come out.
Thanks everyone for your advice, I used a cold chisel and a large
hammer and it finally popped loose. I now have it out.
Any idea what the 'J' in the code stands for?
