Where do I find the timing mark on my '54 F-100? Is it on the fan belt pulley? There is a pointer but I have not seen the timing mark. And what does it look like? My truck won't start and I am beginning to think the timing is off, maybe the timing chain is loose or worn...
It should be stamped on the side dge of the harmonic balance - which your bottom pulley is bolted to.
Usually they are a series of lines with the letters T (or TDC) then in either direction B (or BDC) and A (or ADC) for before dead center and after dead center (they leave the "top" out of the phrase. I usually clean the edge of the balance with a wire brush then dabble a little white or "Day-glo" orange paint on the lines - then wipe it off so it stays in the grooves. Really helps when the light hits it. There should be a flat metal timing marker bolted to the engine down there as well, to alighn th emark onth ebalance with.
abe I hope ya see dis, I have a simple methodfor finding number one piston. Go to the auto parts store and buy yerself a hose tat actually fits to an air line to pump up the air to keep the valve from sinking when you are replacing a valve spring on the engine . Have either yerself or help turnte engine over to where theair starts to come up through the hose you screwed into the number . It should really come up hard as that is your copression stroke . Now go look down on the Harmonic balancerand somewhere, you should see some form of a dot or a bump or something of a reference point to where he T D C and the top point where that piston STARTS to go down . You either will have the rotor button pointing 180 degrees out of phase or be on T D C . For an average , I would sugest run it at 8 degrees before. Generally , snapping the accellerator will show you if you have seen progress. If you get too much advance it will ping . Too retarded, back fire through the exaust . Also be sure to clean the plugsafter you retime a engine as they more often than not will be coated with soot . Ed Shaver
