I just bought a 20 ft enclosed bumper pull tandem axle trailer. Who do you guys use to insure your trailers? I'm in Georgia, but I will use anybody for the insurance. Thanks in advance for your help.
You could check with your regular insurance company. Liability insurance is from the tow vehicle policy. You will only need Comprehensive (fire/theft) and or Collision (your fault accident repair).
Depending on what you paid for the trailer, you may want to forget about Comp and Collision, depending on rates.
when i called my ins they told me i was covered as long as the tow vehicle was insured. i just have liability though. and my trailer/truck are registered as non-commercial.
That's a mis-truth racsan.... ask them WHAT is covered. Only liability.... and if you are running commercial (which you are) they will drop you like a hot potato if you make a claim.
I have an 18 foot utility. When I received it 1 year ago, I contacted my insurance company, Safeco, and they said that in Texas, the liability insurance follows the towing vehicle. I went a head and added insurance on the trailer. I was a little leary like a previous post that it would not be covered or they would deny.
Little hijack here, but the whole personal use vs commercial use is more than just trailers. If you are using your pickup for commercial use and get in an accident you may be fighting to get coverage if you did not disclose that with your insurance agent. State Farm I now for a fact is quite picky on this.
Insurance coverages vary due to state law differences. Example : Michigan - as long as the trailer is coupled to the tow vehicle it is covered. BUT if it is uncoupled or becomes uncoupled then the tow vehicle coverage does not apply. I carry separate insurance on the trailer as a rider to the main insurance.
