I've had a 7.3L F250 for nearly 3 years, and just got a 7.3L Excursion to replace my V10 Excursion. Now I am discovering that there are differences between the 7.3 engine/system applications between the PSD's and the Excursions... like the GPCM on the Ex, etc.
I've also discovered that my stereo/clock doesn't power up until the engine has been running for about 2 minutes. Is this another one of the designed differences, or am I looking at some other problem?
Are there other notable differences besides what I've mentioned?
The differences between the PCMs is expected given the nature of each engine.
However, the fact that your radio doesn't power up correctly has nothing to do with any differences but rather something is wrong with your radio.
The other difference is the 4R100 tranny is a bit stronger to accept the torque of the 7.3L. Rear pinion design is different, too. 3 pinion versus 2 pinion.
I may have mis-communnicated my question. What I'm interested in are the differences between the PSD 7.3 and Excursion 7.3 applications... like the fact that my PSD has a GP relay, and not the GPCM.
On the radio... any ideas or thoguhts as to where to look on that one? Sound like it may be internal or external to the stereo unit itself?
I believe the EX 7.3 is the same as the SD truck 7.3 with California emissions. All EX's with PSD have the CA emissions package. As do the SD's sold in CA. The GPCM is one of the differences, but I do not know what else is different???
Sorry 'bout that...actually I do not know what a GPCM is then...
The radio sounds like an internal power supply issue. But I'm no electronics guru by any stretch.
California prepped PSD's have Glow Plug Control Modules. Non-California prepped PSD's have Glow Plug Relays.
When the GPR's start having problems they're easily replaced with better units, such as the Stancor relay's. Unfortunately, I don't think it's as easy to replace the GPCM's on the California prepped trucks.
That being said, I haven't read too many posts where guys like me have had a lot of problems with the GPCM's on our rigs, so I'm not sure it's a bad thing to have a GPCM instead of a GPR.
Pete, these OEM head units aint the best in the world. I'd look at possibly just replacing it with an aftermarket unit.
Thanks guys. I wasn't aware that all the Ex 7.3's were CA compliant. I guess it's good to know, though.
Regarding the head unit. I would love to put in a Pioneer Avic system, but the cash just is not there at all for that particular issue, especially since my wife doesn't even want the thing playing while she drives. I'll start keeping my eyes peeled for a good deal on a replacement unit, though.
Thanks again for all the input and insights. I know I'll run into more questions on the Ex as time progresses. I had the V10 Ex for two years, but knew right away that I was going to switch over the to 7.3 version so I never invested much time into digging into things... especially since it really never gave us any trouble at all. Now that I'm sort of "bringing up" this diesel model to my performance expectations (based on my 3 years of working with my F250), I'm certainly going to dig deeper.
