C-4 I think
Have 93 F150 4x4 4speed auto 4.9L. was curious about the tranny. First I am not sure how to indentify the type and also maybe somebody could fill me in on the operation. It seems like second gear has 2nd seperate ratios and maybe 3rd as well. What's up? Is it the torque converter or is there an inbetween slippage in the operation to smooth out the shifting? It works fine but ................

It's not a C-4. E4OD and it's inherent slipping in 2nd/3rd.
Put a shift kit (the electronic ones won't work with '93's, I called B&M) in and it'll shift a lot better.
F-L-M trannies have this tendency to soft shifts. Burns clutches and bands like crazy. Never had that problem on GM's, Chryslers, or Older Datsuns that used Borg Warner Auto's. Improve the shift qualities (take out the granny feel) and your tranny will last longer.
