I have a 1990 Ford F250 4X4 with a 460 engine . Tranny
is an E4OD. My problem -- When you start the truck up
you are in OD. I have 1st and 2nd but no third gear. It
just sits there. Seems to want to move but nothing. When I
press the button to take it out of overdrive I have 1st 2nd
and yes I have third. Ok , then when I get the truck up to
about 40 or 45 then press the button to go back to overdrive
it shifts into the overdrive gear. I can drive all day in
overdrive then. But if I drop my speed down to about 35 I loose overdrive and the tranny seems to just slip, sounds like I have it out of gear. I then have to press
the button to take it out of overdrive and I am back in third gear.
Like I said it is a strange problem.
Would be grateful for any help.

It sounds like the valve body solenoid pack has taken a dump. It is easy to change and probably a good idea anyway because of all the updates incorporated into the new ones. Drop the tranny pan, and there it is. If I recall, it is held in place by about 15 Torx headed bolts. Try to order one through somebody as list price on the solenoid pack is like $180 while my cost was only $110. The solenoid pack is only available through Ford.
I bought a 90 model F250 with 460 4x4 with a bad transmission for 500 dollars on ebay. Had transmission rebuilt at reputable shop and its doing the same exact thing. It's under warranty and I'll let you know what is going on as soon as I take it back to them. Maybe something easy?
