buying different truck

I am looking to buy a new to me truck and I have been looking at the newer 6.0 diesel. What years are the best. I have been told to stay away form 03 & 04 not sure why, but am not sure about 05 and up or should I stick with 1999 to 2002 7.3 in ford of course.

They are hit or miss regardless of the model year. A lot of issues were addressed starting in '05, but I know of two '06 trucks with engine issues. Thus, you can't assume all '05 and up are perfect. If you find a truck you like, get an Oasis report from the dealer to see what warranty work has been performed. That will be your best source of information. My $0.02 would be NOT to avoid the 6.0L; just make sure you do your homework prior to purchase. Good luck.

Oh, and welcome to FTE!

05 and up have the better trans in them. I would also see if you can get one that has the tow package and integrated trailer brake controller on it.

It is hit and miss though.

Stick with the 7.3!! 6.0 are scary expensive over the last 4 or 5 that I've had. It seems that around 60 to 75,000 miles is wear the problems begin. Unless you lose an engine. I usually lost those around 40,000 miles or sooner. Injectors are expensive and a pain in the but. Once your injector starts to go its killing the cylinder so don't just drive it. I've gone through over 100+ injectors over my experience with 6.0's I'm one of those people who have been turned away from ford diesel due to failures. I owned 03,04,05 and they were all expensive. Also lost two tranny's one on the 04 and 05. Their was other failures but these were the main killers for me. Good luck and pick wisely. I was told they have gotten a lot of these problem fixed but was looking at 2 6.4 with busted motors this weekend and not sure what happend to those yet, less than 10,000 miles. I'm a ford guy not a diesel guy.

What ever you decide I would get the best warranty you can. When I got my 6.0 I had heard all the horror stories so I got a 6year 100k mile bumper to bumper from ford and so far so good. No problems yet!

pardon me but over 100 injectors? this is not the trucks but likely the fuel cause that is disgusting. I've had my truck for about 70k miles, it has around 145k miles and I still have an original injector in it, same motor the truck came with, same egr cooler the truck came with and same turbo the truck came with. 2 injectors replaced while I've had the truck.
