I just bought a 78 f150 and no compression on a cylinder 99.9% sure the intake valve is junk, and was wondering while i have the heads off what i should do to them to jazz it up a bit? I have about a 500 dollar spending limit. Thanks Lumpy78
My advice is to throw the stock heads away and get a set of E7's from a later truck, the smaller combustion chambers will raise compression from about 8.2 to 9:1 and you'll get more power across the board. You should be able to source these for very low $$, almost every 5.0 and 5.8 after 1987 had them so they are litterally all over the place.
Also on E7's for another cheap power up grade. On the exhaust side of the heads there is an EGR bump that you can remove. you do not have to be porting expert to do this it is very easy to grind out. There was an article over this in the 90's but i do not remember if it was 5.0 mag. or Muscle Mustang that covered it.
If you really want to see what the motor is capable of, consider a cam swap while you have it all apart, the stock cam is also very restrictive on these smog motors. The Comp Cams 31-230-3 is hugh bang for the bucks. COMP Cams CL31-230-3 - COMP Cams Xtreme Energy Cam and Lifter Kits
