So today I went and got a camp trailer about a 20' gooseneck not sure what the GVW is but cant be that heavy my truck has the wastegated banks sidewinder turbo and 4"straight piped exhaust K&N filter its also a standard trans. well I dont get why my Pyro is so High I was pulling some hills today and in fourth gear(because icouldnt keep any speed in 5th) only doing 65 when it would do 65mph the pyro was at 900 so I'd back off a little my pyro is mounted in the manifold and according to the Banks owners manual I shouldnt exceed 1050 degrees shouldnt my truck be able to do a little better than what its doing? keep in mind it only has 70K on it, just pisses me off! cause I got it for pulling and better fuel economy while I'm doing it, and pulling or not I'm only getting about 12mpg any Ideas

if pyro is in manifold then you could probly go 1100 on hills no problem, when banks sais that they usaully are talking about when the pyro probe is in the location that the put it, and a 20' trailer is a big trailer so it catches lots of wind weather it heavy or not its going to slow you down
Dont you think I should be able to due a little better than 65 its funny cause even if I just push it to the floor in those situation theres no response it may hold it a little depending on the hill but it pretty much just seems like it dont make no difference and how about the milage does that seem normal
WOW at least your making me feel better what can you do to help these puppies out I really dont care to be a drag racing champ I just wanna tow like a tractor. If I turn up my boost and IP will I see any difference in pulling power or just in throttle response and off the line speed.
a ram-air intake is a good mod, a good free flowing exaust, how much boost do you see now? you probly dont want to go a hole lot higher than 12 i belive 15 is max on 7.3
I think its set at ten but need a boost gauge my air filter is purely exposed but I saw som pictures of one that was tube out the grill so the air inthe front of the truck would flow in
get you a boost gauges they are one of the cheapest gauges to buy you can get a sunpro at any autozone or orielley auto parts if there one in your area
This is from a service manual for the IDI from back in the day.
I only have the requirements for 55 MPH, but I bet you are over 100 square feet of frontal area.
This chart shows the amount of HP required for a given frontal area at a speed of 55 MPH.
Area in Sq. Ft. - HP required
50 -------------- 56
60 - -------------66
70 - -------------78
80 - -------------89
90 - -------------99
From my days driving big rigs, the holes in the air you are dragging down the road also play a very large part of how hard something it to pull.
By this I mean between the truck and trailer and behind the trailer.
Remember the stories of big trucks pulling small cars down the road if they got close enough that the car could actually be in neutral?
They are true, and very dangerous because if the trailer blows a tire someone in the car will probably pay for the free ride with their life or an extended stay in the hospital when 100 pounds of tire comes through the windshield.
Do you have any aerodynamic devices to help with airflow?
Given what you are pulling, 65 MPH and 12 MPG is not bad.
Depending on your driving style and location, with a ZF 5 you should be seeing a bit higher MPH when empty though.
