mechanical vs electric gauges

I have been looking at some guages (oil pressure and coolant temp)- but i'm not sure which to purchase. i remember my dad had some mechanical gauges in his truck and the oil pressure blew the line and dumped oil inside the cab- thats not something i am really looking forward to. I like the idea that the mechanical gauges are cheaper-but you have to run all the lines to them. and the electrical gauges are nice because you just have to run the wire- but those are like 2-3xs as expensive. has anyone else had a problem with broken plumbing or any opinions on either one? thanks

For the most part the nylon tubing is rather durable. I've had several mechanical oil gauges and never a problem. However on my current truck, I did opt for an electrical oil pressure. I stayed with the mechanical vacuum gauge though.

In autometer, the difference between (I think I recall the right pns) 4321(mechanical) and 4327(short sweep electrical) is only $10-20. The rest of their line should be pretty close to the same prices (aside from the really expensive lines like cobalt and c2).

I would keep the oil under the hood as much as possible in a truck truck.

thanks reax i think i will go with the electric gauges. after i posted this i searched for old threads and found a couple- i do agree with you on the wire vs plumbing- the carpet shampoo would probably cost more than the difference between prices

Mechanical temp gauges tend to be a little more accurate, but finding a dash hole large enough for the thermocouple plus not being able to shorten the capillary tubing makes them a pain to install.
