What brand is the engine? If it is a Tecumseh, you may want to stock up on parts while you still can. They discontinued production of all their engines, and parts to go along with them.
I never liked working on Tecumseh pushmower engines. It seems like every engine took a different gasket whereas the same sump gasket would fit 90% or more of Briggs engines. Their valve compartment was always too tight to conveniently use my favorite valve spring retainer tool, and those damn internal ignitions were a pain in the *** to service and adjust compared to Briggs.
I will give them credit for using pressurized lube on even their smallest engines, but since I have seen many splash lube briggs engines living far beyond engineered life-spans with good maintenance, I don't know that the extra cost was worth it.
Craigslist is a great place to find used engines (on used lawn mowers). Main thing you need to watch, after determining that the used engine is in good running condition, is that you get one with the same external crankshaft dimensions so that you pulleys fit and line up.
