My mom owns a 98' Navigator, she asked me to do the shocks on it since her mechanic told her to have them done. So I went to go and do them, luckily I checked the car prior to getting them. I found that she has an air-ride system on both front and rear. She told me that there has been a rather loud humming noise coming from the from passenger side of the vehicle both when turning on the car and after shutting the vehicle off, it happens for 10-30secs.. The issue is, it feels as though there is absolutely no air in the system. I drove it around and it just endlessly bounces after hitting a bump. Basically it feels like there is no air in the system or like your driving with severely dead shocks. Any ideas?
There are many threads on here about this. I would first check to make sure the compressor is working, if it is then check the union by te master cylinder. If that is not leaking then check the rear bags. I would start with the compressor. Do a search for LLS.
I've got a 99 expedition and I have the air ride on the rear only but it has shocks in the rear as well. You need to change those to help improve the ride. In the passenger kick panel there should be a shutoff switch for the compressor. You can turn that off to see if the humming noise goes away. If so then the compressor is running and that is what the sound is. If its running a lot then you may have a slow leak.
