Since the beginning of NASCAR they have started the lap cars on the inside line during a restart.
The problem with this is that the leaders end up starting on the outside line trying to pass the lap down slower cars during the restart of a race.
NASCAR has announced that starting at Pocono Raceway this weekend the will go to a double file restart and put the lap down cars at the tail end of the field like they should be.
The lucky dog award will still be in effect so that the first car a lap down to cross the line will restart at the back of the pack in the first position of the lapped cars.
For anyone who has watched this years All Star race this is how that race was ran and it made for some great restarts with the fastest cars up front battling it out to be the leader at the start finish line.
In my opinion this is a much over due change and it’s going to make for some great racing.
Totally agree with this. PLUS, they keep the "lucky dog" rule all the way, instead of cutting it off at 10 laps to go......I bet this came as a result of the "town hall meeting" they had a few days ago. Boy, what I wouldn't give to have been there......bet it was interesting, just drivers, owners, and NASCAR, no crew chiefs or media.
Should be a good change. Might be a few more races before we really see it affect the outcome but should make things more interesting for sure. Wonder how it will work at Sonoma? Usually don't get too many lap down cars on the road course so it's mostly single file.
I've been going to NASCAR races since #3 was a rookie. I've seen some good racing in the past. In the last few years the racing is nothing more than high speed parades. The double file restarts won't solve the poor racing. It's good for a few laps and then they are right back to parade mode. The good racing now is Daytona and Talladega, for the fans, but the drivers are bitchin' they are too close to each other. My money moved to IRL and NHRA.
Best, CB
It has been better with the COT car. I was a guy that didn't want the COT,but it has made racing better in the past two seasons. The COT car can take a hit that's for sure.
Kind of wish NASCAR was a bit more - technologically advanced. Let teams experiment with their own cars/engines and follow a set of guidelines. Instead of virtually have the exact same engine/chassis/suspension combo in every car. Fuel injection would be nice for starters...
It'd be nice to see something different, back to the roots of NASCAR now that the big three have rear wheel drive cars again. Make them run cars in their stock configuration. no Camry, no Taurus, no Lumina or whatever that thing is they're running. Chargers, Challengers, Mustangs, Camaros, I'd even let Hyundai in with their Genesis Coupe. Let them sort out what they want, IRS or live axle, fuel injection, etc. Set them up on a huge track about 8-10miles, and let them go whatever speed they want.
