I'm new here in the Ranger Forum. I've spent lots of time in the Aerostar one but I'm now a B300 owner.
It's a 94 I bought about 2 months ago with 79K on it and a 3.0 engine. The bumper has a place to put a ball for towing. The paperwork that came with it states that there is no towing package installed (when it was new).
I don't want to tow anything big. If I rent a cement mixer or one of those small trailers to haul things like lawn mowers, can I do it. Do you need to hook up the wiring to the light for that or only if you can't see the truck taillights?
I guess I just wondered what I can do with this setup.
You can tow things w/o a 'towing package'. A towing package just pre-wires the brake, turn and tail light connections. It also could have used a relay to supply power to the trailer lights (some did, anyway). It may have included a larger radiator. You should have no problem towing what you describe. Just remember that it is back there, so you leave extra braking room.

theres a wiring harness that "T" 's into the truck wiring for about 15 bucks at the walmart towing section, easy and quick to do. comes with a diode box (because you have different bulbs for stop & turn and trailers use the old-school dual-filament bulb). sometimes that converter box will go bad, no biggie. just get another. mine has been on there for a good 3 years but when i got the truck the one that was on it was bad.
I will. I don't want to tow anything like a travel trailer or camper. I was thinking of things like rental tools. I would like to take up a section of sidewalk and would need a cement mixer.
